The flag of the Aborigines |
The population of the aborigines is only 464.000. Three quarter of this people live in cities.
The aborigines are one of the poorest people in Australia. Mainly the Aborigines, who live in the rural environment, are very poor. The unemployment rate is about 20% in this area, the lifespan is lower, the education isn’t good and the infant mortality rate is high. They are only 4% of the population of Australia, but about 20% of the prison inmates.
Feeding
The aborigines are hunter-gatherers and aborigines, who live at the coast or at rivers, are fishermen. They aren’t farmers. Two tribes in the state Victoria had an eel-farm.
The natural food from the aborigines is kangaroos, emus, wombats, snakes and birds. In the desert they eat insects like the honey-ant. Aborigines, who live near the ocean, eat clams and crustaceans. Besides they eat nuts, fruits and berries.
The primary instrument to hunt was the spear. Sometimes they use boomerangs.
The aborigines aren’t cannibals. It’s only a rumor, a misunderstanding of the funeral rituals of the aborigines.
They lived in simple huts or shelters which were built with twigs or bark. Permanent huts made of branches, tree bark, grass and reeds were built only for longer stays. The camp could not be entered by members of other tribes, unless they were invited. If a messenger was sent to another tribe, he had to wait with some distance, until he received permission to come closer.
